t-minus zwei

Every three years, my family holds reunions. We call them treffs.
Our treffs steadily alternate location between Canada and Germany.

Reuniting with everyone brings me so much joy, appreciation, respect. The German component of my family is huge and soon I’ll be seeing them all.

This photo is of a different sort of treff:

In September 2012, I revisited my beloved 101.9 as part of a 10-year undergrad homecoming.

CFRC raised me well. It fostered exploration, concision, and it taught me the value of listening.

Big heart.

My Parents Have Been Busy

We had fun doing this yesterday!
Cheers, Dad

In May our committee approved a special project to grow a crop of soy beans on a 25 acre field in West Carleton. The proceeds of this project will go to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFB). The mission of the CFB is to end global hunger (see http://foodgrainsbank.ca/mission.aspx), and there are more than 250 partnerships like ours across Canada supporting the CFB with similar growing projects. The project entails many tasks: locating a field, purchasing the seed, fertilizer and weed spray, working the land, harvesting the crop, erecting a project sign, and hosting commissioning and celebration events. Already groups of woodworkers and painters are busy on the project sign, and no doubt others will offer to help with the hosting of a celebration harvest event in the fall!

102

I’d caught a cabbage butterfly and loved it so much that I wanted it to be available for me the next day. That evening I carefully trapped it between the white sieve and the green pail and hid the makeshift cage in a safe corner of your Belleville backyard. Unfortunately, the dew from the following morning was not agreeable with the butterfly’s delicate wings and I remember discovering its death with Dad that day.

Nothing is ever ours forever.
Happy birthday on what would have been your 102nd, Grandma.
