Pan Am

Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation (MNCFN) is the Host First Nation of the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games as the sporting and celebration venues take place on their vast traditional lands that extend south to Long Point on Lake Erie, east to the Niagara River & River Rouge and west to the River Thames. The sacred tradition of the Three Fires ceremony, that has sustained hundreds of years, will be shared with new friends and visitors. The Three Fires are symbolic of the Mississaugas traditional and political alliance with the Ojibway, Odawa and Pottawatomi Nations. A council was formed called the Three Fires Council, and still exists today. Three locations within this traditional territory of MNCFN were specifically selected.

The Toronto Islands were chosen for the first fire within their traditional territory as they were sacred grounds with significant religious and spiritual importance. With their close proximity to battlegrounds of Fort York, these islands, although a peninsula at the time, were a place of peace for the Mississaugas First Nations.
