our hostel is in the most densely populated area of all HK. C and i huddle together as we proceed through the clatter. it is very hot and the air is so thickly packed that you can smell something different every 10 steps. one minute outside and the entire atmosphere is stuck to you. there’s no stopping some of these high rises. i think there must be over 70 floors on some of them, all dilapidated with unsightly air conditioners humming and dripping out of every window onto the teeming hordes below. the neon signs light up the street as if it were just cloudy instead of nighttime, and the clothing on drying racks hangs lifeless and ever-damp in the heavy stench. this city is a giant arcade. C and i are thinking about heading to Macau one day on one of the old ferries that pass around the harbour. there’s a piano store upstairs which we can see from our balcony, beside it an old woman who i think is a tailor. beside her is a small shrine which passers-by pay homage to now and then if they should be walking on the 7th floor…
